I wonder if the oil cooler position is to keep the Twin Cam temp under control, they can run a bit warm.
I rebuilt a Europa with a modded Twin cam, had to increase the size of the rad and go triple core. Still ended up running it without the boot in the rear just to give room to breath. _________________ Cheers

the main problem for the engine was the rear air flow under the bonnet.
the wonderfull streamlined shape does not care about the thermical demands of the engine. so all costins got cut-outs at the rear by 1969 . |

As well as that i would suggest the rear valance acts like a parachute and collects the air from underneath the car causing drag..Dare i be critical of Frank Costin!
Mark Woodhouse will have to be brave and brutal to cut out that lovely rear panel! |

Probably better to make a spare, than chop the original.
As the actual lid is flat maybe make a Hybrid one with the cowel part in glassfibre and the lid in Ally with louvres pressed in it. (like a Merak)
Then being Ally it would be easier to mod for the cooler and generally chop about for racing.
As for tampering with the original design, I would call it race development... _________________ Cheers

| Indeed, Roger Nathan states in his fine book that the raised rear wings induce drag but appear to help with straight line stability at speed. To my mind the air intakes are too far back to benefit anything other than brake cooling (perhaps not altogether necessary on the rear of such a lightweight car). They'd probably be better just behind the cockpit to serve induction and oil cooling. The intake at the front of the nose seems rather small too compared with the Chevron B8...Is it me or am I designing the Astra in my head? A bit like someone seeing an AC Ace and suggesting wider bodywork and a V8 might be fun! |

The first time i saw a C/N i thought that the air intake was rather small and gives the expression of it being poked up the bum...Ooohh!
The Astra was obviously revamped along all areas.
The oil cooler should be put up the front also..Or nowadays a system called a laminova can be ulterlised....See photo of caption photo file "Nathan Imp"
I'll try and find the photo of the laminova installed in my Imp and post it! |
